TeamTalk boosts network coverage with next-gen microwave tech

Wellington, 18 September 2017 – NZX-listed telco TeamTalk has deployed NEC’s next-generation microwave technology to meet growing demand for voice and data services.

The network provider has completed the first phase of an upgrade programme, using NEC’s next generation iPasolink microwave radio to increase backhaul capacity between sites to deliver more robust and higher capacity services.

TeamTalk CFO Jason Bull said the upgrade had added over 100 microwave links to the company’s network, enabling the telco provider to deliver more network services, more efficiently to all parts of New Zealand.

“From our early days as a mobile radio network operator we now connect different applications, including data, video, and voice, across mixed radio and fibre networks,” said Bull. “NEC’s microwave technology and management systems provide the smarts to cope with demand spikes and integrate switching to deliver a better customer experience.”

NEC’s microwave radio system delivers a TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) backplane for trunk radio, and a high-capacity Ethernet backplane with advanced switching for voice services and high-speed broadband.

With eyes on continued expansion, TeamTalk is using NEC’s technology to take advantage of newly available 80 and 112Mhz RF channels, and electrical tuning to cover more spectrum.

David Tse, NEC’s director of sales and marketing, said microwave technology provided cost-effective connectivity solutions both for dense urban areas with poor connectivity and remote rural areas with no connectivity. “Feedback from a growing number of customer enquiries suggests local businesses are switching on to the ease and simplicity of microwave solutions. The technology requires little investment in additional infrastructure, few if any planning permissions, and there’s no need to dig up roads to lay cables. It solves a number of curly problems”

TeamTalk last month reported an after tax profit of $5.12m for the year to 30 June. Revenue from operations rose 3.4 percent to $34.0m.
