Police, NZ Cricket, Avery win annual RiskNZ awards

August 18, 2017

New Zealand Police and New Zealand Cricket have been honoured at RiskNZ’s annual awards in Wellington last night for their exemplary efforts in managing and mitigating risk management.

Grant Avery, a highly qualified risk advisor who is currently helping the Treasury, won the Risk Management Professional of the Year.

He has been consulting to and contracting with major government entities in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, as well as to and for multi-national consultancies. There was special mention of his commitment to personal professional development.

RiskNZ chair Nigel Toms says all the award winners demonstrated effective risk management measures and programmes.

NZ Cricket introduced a raft of ideas at all levels, including tying a risk register to its strategic plan, while the police had introduced a risk-wide scheme and appointed a position for a chief risk officer.

Toms says the standard of entries was high and he appreciated attitudinal changes within organisations as well as investments in training.

“Companies are moving to make risk everyone’s responsibility,” he says.

NZ Cricket now made risk a priority at every board meeting and the NZ Police had successfully transformed to now having highly regarded enterprise-wide practical risk management performance.

More than 20 speakers addressed RiskNZ’s two-day conference ending yesterday which was designed to help organisations deal with increasing uncertainty and face fundamental management challenges including disruptive technologies, business and technical innovation, natural hazards, cyber-attacks, societal changes, geopolitics and trade barriers.
