Leading construction specialists advise on Christchurch’s new $240 million convention centre

Ōtākaro Limited awarded the design and construction contract for the development of the Christchurch Convention and Exhibition Centre project to CPB Contractors this week.

CPB Contractors, owned by Australian CIMIC Group, will build Christchurch’s Convention Centre which is estimated to cost NZ$240 million.

Leading law firm MinterEllisonRuddWatts worked closely with Ōtākaro Limited and provided advice to the Project Team on all stages of the procurement process for the Convention Centre project, leading up to contract award.

MinterEllisonRuddWatts led the drafting of the design and construct contract as well as the various consultancy agreements which have been novated over to CPB Contractors.

A Christchurch Rebuild initiative, the Convention and Exhibition Centre complex will feature a 1400-delegate auditorium, a banquet hall, 14 meeting rooms and an exhibition hall for up to 200 stalls and is expected to open in early 2020.

"The Convention and Exhibition Centre is an important cornerstone project in the heart of the city with significant economic benefit, helping to attract more visitors and investment to the city," says Construction Partner, Sarah Sinclair.

"The project has a number of stakeholders and interested parties and we were able to draw on the experience of our team who have advised, and continue to advise, on Christchurch’s anchor projects.

"This knowledge was an advantage in finalising this contract with CPB Contractors."
