St John to get a slice of Original Foods Baking Co’s Red Velvet Cake profits

Original Foods Baking Co’s Red Velvet Cake is at the centre of celebrations in many New Zealand households, with the deep red colour, rich chocolatey flavour and creamy vanilla icing making it impossible to stop at just one slice.

That sweet indulgence now comes with the added advantage of knowing your purchase is helping someone in need, with $1 NZD from every Original Foods branded Red Velvet round cake going to New Zealand charities.

St John medical response services have been announced as the latest charity recipient.

“We are delighted to be able to support the incredible work that St John does,” said OFBC Managing Director, Jane Mayell.

“Not only do they provide a country-wide ambulance service, they also perform great work with first aid training and a wide range of youth and community groups, helping to save hundreds of lives every year.

“Original Foods Baking Co is a family business and it is a privilege for us to be able to give back in some way to all the families that support us.”

Celebrating their 26th year in business, OFBC is accustomed to contributing to the communities important to its customers and employees.

In 2011 following the devastating Canterbury earthquakes, the company produced a Red Velvet cake known as ‘A Cake for Canterbury’ with a percentage of sales contributing to rebuilding the city’s parks and recreational facilities. Funds raised totalled over $50,000 NZD.

Red Velvet cakes then went on to support the Countdown Kids Foundation raising more than $65,000 NZD to help fund vital medical research.

Sharing the community spirit around, this year’s Red Velvet cake charity is St John.

“We are delighted that some of the proceeds of our Red Velvet cakes have been able to support such invaluable work over the past six years,” said Ms Mayell.

“St John does invaluable work too and we hope the money we are able to contribute on our customers’ behalf will make a very real difference.”

Debbie Pipson, St John Fundraising and Marketing Manager for NZ’s South Island, said St John was grateful to have Original Foods’ support.

“We are a charity and rely on the generosity of donors and supporters right across the community.

“We treat over 430,000 patients every year and it is great to know that money raised from Original Foods will go towards helping them.”

Original Foods Baking Co’s round Red Velvet cakes can be found in Countdown and Foodstuffs stores throughout New Zealand.
