Prominent Southland station up for sale
One of Southland’s largest farming stations is on the market for the first time in 40 years.
Strong interest is expected in the sale of Glenlapa Station, a significant property encompassing 5271 hectares of prime
pastureland in Northern Southland. The expansive station has a tremendous capacity of more than 20,000 stock units,
making it one of the largest and most successful farms in the region.
New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty sales associate Russell Reddell says it’s uncommon for a property of this
magnitude to be up for public sale.
“Glenlapa Station is an iconic high-country station – rarely does a property of this scale come to the open market in
New Zealand,” he says. “It has remained a family enterprise for more than four decades and they have methodically
developed the land and infrastructure to create a large-scale, sustainable breeding unit. With scope for further
development, this is an incredibly unique opportunity.”
The station – predominantly a sheep and cattle operation – is located at 594 Glenlapa Road, Cattle Flat and will be sold
via deadline sale on Friday, May 19.
It encompasses five residences; a contemporary six-bedroom Homestead with a tennis court, a four-bedroom home, two
three-bedroom homes and a single shepherds’ quarters with four bedrooms. Other features of the property include a
spectacular geography of hills, river flats and downs, extraordinary views, two airstrips, three backcountry huts,
multiple sheep and cattle yards, a seven-stand woolshed and a workshop.
“Glenlapa is extremely private with great recreational attributes,” Reddell adds. “It’s bordered by both the Mataura and
Dome Burn Rivers, with world-class brown trout fishing. Wild deer live throughout the station and its tracks are well
formed for horse riding, mountain biking and motor bike riding. It’s an exceptionally diverse property, all just an
hour-and-a-half away from Invercargill and Queenstown.”
Sustainability and land management have been a central focus for Glenlapa’s current owners, who have instated a
comprehensive conservation program. However, Reddell says they are now looking forward to opening the station up for new
opportunities under new ownership.
“Glenlapa Station would suit a host of different operators – existing farmers wanting to increase their current
operation, businesspeople looking for a solid agricultural investment or a family with an interest in land investment
and farming. There’s also plenty of scope and infrastructure for an intergenerational family investment working
together,” Reddell says.
