990,250For the second consecutive month, Auckland Airport welcomed a record number of international passengers. The 990,250 (excluding transit passengers) in January was 30,000 more than the previous record set in December – and 10.9% more than in January 2016. January’s new high was driven by a combination of higher international visitors and a record number of New Zealanders travelling overseas, as well as the earlier timing of the Chinese New year holiday.
27.5%Auckland Airport’s Chinese visitor arrivals in January were up 27.5% on January 2016 – an increase driven by the recent growth in direct airline capacity and the earlier timing of the Chinese New Year (January this year compared to February last year). Strong Chinese New Year traffic was also experienced from Hong Kong (+73.6%) and Taiwan (+14.1%). Auckland Airport now has six airlines operating a total of 44 weekly services between Auckland and mainland China, and will add a seventh airline with the launch of Sichuan Airlines’ three-weekly service between Chengdu and Auckland from June 2017.
11.8%International passenger volumes at Cairns Airport were up 11.8% in January 2016 and have grown by 20% over the last 12 months. 18.4%Auckland Airport’s international visitor arrivals from the Americas grew 18.4% in January 2017. Double-digit arrivals growth from American (+20%), Canadian (+11.4%), Argentinian (+22.3%),and Brazilian (+47.3 %) visitors was driven by the new American Airlines’ Los Angeles and United Airlines’ San Francisco services and capacity increases on Air New Zealand’s Houston and Buenos Aires routes.
