Te Wānanga o Aotearoa appoints Bernard Te Paa as new Hoe Whakatere, Te Ihu
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is delighted to announce the appointment of Bernard Te Paa as Hoe Whakatere, Te Ihu (Regional
Director Auckland/Northland).
Te Taiurungi (chief executive) of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Dr Jim Mather, welcomes Bernard’s appointment.
“Bernard has significant executive-level experience in roles that sought and led to better outcomes for Māori.”
“His achievements align with our aspirations for our tauira and their whānau, so
I’m delighted to have Bernard’s considerable experience leading our kaimahi in
Te Ihu takiwā.”
Bernard (Ngāti Whātua, Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Waikato) successfully led the Auckland Council’s Māori economic
development programme and implemented its approach to establishing relationships with iwi entities.
Prior to this, Bernard was General Manager Māori Health at Counties Manukau District Health Board, where he was
responsible for restructuring the delivery and contracting of services to Māori.
Bernard said after a 20-year career working for public entities, he was excited by the new challenges ahead in the
education sector with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
“It’s a perfect role at this time in my career, and it’s a perfect opportunity to step into a kaupapa Māori space,” he
said.
“I will bring a fresh perspective to look at how we can do our business as usual better, and what the range of
opportunities will be in Te Ihu Takiwā.”
Bernard holds a Master of Public Administration and a Postgraduate Diploma of Business.
A pōwhiri will be held on Monday 27 February at the Māngere Campus, at 11 am to welcome Bernard to Te Wānanga o
Aotearoa.
