Confirmation today that the Trade (Anti-dumping and Countervailing Duties) Amendment Bill has reached an impasse in select committee stage, is further proof it needs to be scrapped, says the EMA.

The Bill seeks to amend the current legislation by effectively allowing dumping of overseas goods into our market if the Government thinks it is in the public interest.

"This is clearly a piece of legislation looking for a problem. It is not supported by the business community. Our submission, along with many others asked for the bill to be overturned," says Kim Campbell, CEO, EMA.

The government already has the power to enable exemptions in exceptional circumstances, and was applied for the Christchurch rebuild.

"The net effect will enable dumping with no real recourse for local manufacturers. And furthermore, it will jeopardise higher paying local manufacturing jobs," says Mr Campbell.

The Commerce Select Committee votes on this Bill are tied and therefore is unable to recommend whether or not the Bill should proceed to second reading.
