International Internet cable begins its build today
InternetNZ is very pleased to see that the Hawaiki cable build has officially started today.
The build began today at Mangawhai Heads and the cable will stretch 14,000km through to Sydney, Hawaii and mainland USA.
InternetNZ Chief Executive Jordan Carter says the additional cable provides New Zealand with more security in our Internet supply and more competition in communications.
"Having additional links in place will mean that New Zealand Internet users will benefit from additional connectivity.
"Over time, the Hawaiki cable should lead to more bandwidth, at cheaper prices, and with more security in supply. This can only be a good thing," says Carter.
The announcement that the Hawaiki cable received funding and was going ahead made news in April 2015. InternetNZ is pleased to see the project finally underway.
The cable is scheduled to be complete around the middle of 2018.
