Support package for Kaikoura businesses endorsed
BusinessNZ says the wage subsidy assistance
plan for small businesses around Kaikoura is appropriate and
well-placed.
The Government’s Earthquake Support Subsidy will pay capped wages for full-time and part-time employees of businesses affected by the closure of SH1 and the impact on the region’s fishing industry.
BusinessNZ Chief Executive Kirk Hope said the approach worked well following the Christchurch earthquakes as it helped businesses retain their staff during the aftermath of the disasters.
"Otherwise, the flow-on effect of losing vital staff following a significant natural disaster would be a double whammy for many businesses.
"Supporting wage payments is the most practical way to keep those communities operating and get businesses back on track."
Mr Hope said it was appropriate that firms holding insurance cover for loss of earnings would be expected to use this before accessing the wage subsidy.
"The use of community organisations to administer the scheme including the Ministry of Social Development, Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise North Canterbury, and the Kaikoura and Hurunui District Councils will help ensure the widest possible support for affected businesses," Mr Hope said.
