Update on the Spark network
Spark has now completed a full review of our network following the earthquake this morning.
Kaikoura and Blenheim are experiencing the most significant connectivity issues due to damage to the fixed network, and power outages affecting mobile cell sites around the area. People in or near those areas may have limited or no access to landline, broadband and mobile services. Spark’s technical teams are working hard to re-establish connection.
A further eight mobile cell sites around the affected area are running on back-up battery power and Spark is working to ensure they are re-connected to the mains or to a backup generator. In addition, some people in Wellington may experience issues with mobile coverage due to damage to cell sites in Wellington but there will be overlapping coverage from nearby cell sites.
The Kaikoura Exchange is working but is not currently connected to the national network due to damage to the fixed network. Spark is arranging for staff to be flown to the exchange in the next couple of hours by helicopter. Once the building has been assessed for damage, staff will be working to diagnose the cuts to the network and re-establish connection.
As Spark and Chorus have restricted access to some of the key exchanges while they are evaluated for earthquake damage, there may be some delay in restoring services.
Update on Spark stores
Spark stores in Wellington CBD, Queensgate, Moorhouse Avenue Christchurch and Blenheim are currently closed. Stores in Wanganui, Kapiti, Nelson, and West Coast are currently being inspected but may open later today. Customers should check the Spark website or confirm directly with their local stores or business hubs as this list will be changing throughout the day as inspections progress.
