Meridian Energy returns to central Christchurch

Meridian Energy today celebrated moving into new offices in central Christchurch at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister, Rt Hon John Key, the Mayor of Christchurch Lianne Dalziel and members of the city’s business community.

At the Awly building on Durham Street, Meridian’s chief executive Mark Binns said returning to the Central Business District was an important milestone for the company.

“Moving back into central Christchurch symbolises a fresh start for our 370 staff and fulfills a promise we made in the wake of the 2011 earthquake to return and rebuild.

“We’re a nationwide retailer, but we’ve always served our customers from this city. As one of the country’s largest listed companies it’s important we play our part in supporting the reinvigoration of the business community in Christchurch,” says Mark.

The Awly building, built by the Yeo family who run the company Awly Investments, is built on the site of the previous Amuri Courts and URS House, which were significantly damaged following the earthquakes.

Anna Yeo said her family had owned the site since 1996 and was committed to being part of the new fabric of the city.

“We wanted to create a building that would stand the test of time and that would be a fantastic place in which to work. Our family is very proud of what we’ve achieved and we’re delighted to welcome Meridian to the building.”

Anna expects to announce another major tenant shortly.

A new public mural was unveiled at the event by local artist Wayne Youle. Located in the courtyard of the Awly building complex, the mural, entitled te taiao, ki te whaiao, ki te ao mārama: past – present – future, was commissioned by Meridian as a show of support for public art that is helping redefine the city.

Details of the Awly building:

• The Warren and Mahoney designed office and retail precinct comprises three adjoining buildings with an energy efficient glass curtain façade, framing a central courtyard.

• It is in the heart of the much sought after western bank of the Avon River and a stone’s throw from the Convention Centre and Cultural and Performing Arts Precincts.

• It is regarded as one of the safest buildings in New Zealand. It is 130% of New Building Standard and includes three seismic elements - deep pile foundations, base isolators and structural steel braces.

• The Awly building has achieved a 5 Green Star Design rating – the first building in the city post-quake to attain the rating.
