NZ Arb encourages appropriate tree assessment
In response to a recent incident at a childcare centre where a tree fell, injuring children, New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZ Arb) stresses tree owners have their trees regularly assessed by a professional arborist.
Seth Thompson, President of the national industry body, says NZ Arb recommends tree owners get their trees regularly examined.
"From time to time incidents, such as the one earlier this week, do occur and we wish the children involved a speedy recovery,” says Thompson.
“Fortunately, harm or injury from trees is extremely low; however, it is important to recognise that it is a duty of care for tree owners to ensure that their trees are both healthy and safe.”
Thompson adds: “NZ Arb recommends tree owners have their trees assessed by a professional, reputable arborist. Arborists are trained in tree health, safety and management and can identify defects that could potentially cause harm and provide the tree owner with practical advice on how to manage this risk – and as the trees are dynamic living organisms, the length of time that the tree needs to be reassessed.”
As the industry’s professional body, NZ Arb members are required to adhere to a clear code of conduct and appropriate professional standards, and are expected to be familiar with any local tree felling restrictions.
The organisation also runs an ‘Approved Contractor Scheme’ – these contractors have undergone a rigorous vetting process and need to maintain the highest professional and ethical standards to retain their status.
“By engaging one of our Approved Contractors, property owners can expect to receive accurate advice on both the local regulations and appropriate tree care,” says Thompson.

About
New Zealand Arboricultural Association
The New
Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZ Arb) was created in
1989 in response to a growing demand for the formation of a
national body to represent professional and non-professional
people involved in New Zealand tree care.
In 1996, NZ Arb
joined the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) to
become its 32nd Chapter. The New Zealand Arboricultural
Association is proud to foster the mission of the ISA;
through research, technology and education, promote the
professional practice of arboriculture and foster a greater
public awareness of the benefits of trees. For more
