Where are New Zealand’s ‘luckiest’ Lotto stores?
There’s a breath-taking $38 million up for grabs with Powerball on Saturday and Kiwis around the country are heading to their local Lotto shop to pick up their lucky ticket – but just where are the ‘luckiest’ stores in the country?
Unichem Stortford Lodge Pharmacy in Hastings has a reputation as New Zealand’s ‘luckiest’ Lotto shop – and with good reason. The store sold two First Division winning tickets this year, which bumped its impressive tally up to 43 First Division winning tickets over the years, including two Powerball First Division prizes.
But while the North Island may lay claim to the ‘luckiest’ store in the country, the South Island is hot on its heels, with Pak N Save Riccarton in Christchurch and Nelson’s Richmond Night N Day tying as the second-equal ‘luckiest’ stores with 32 First Division wins each.
Coastlands Lotto in Paraparaumu comes in at third place with 29 First Division wins, while Berrymans in Auckland, Mall Books and Lotto in Wellington and Hornby Mall Lotto in Christchurch share the title of fourth ‘luckiest’ with 26 First Division wins each.
While these stores are known for their good luck, New Zealand’s next Powerball win could happen anywhere in the country.
“We know these stores will be busier than usual with players hoping some of their previous good luck will rub off,” said Emilia Mazur, General Manager, Corporate Communications at Lotto NZ.
“Every year a different store sells a winning Powerball ticket. This year there have been big Powerball wins in Timaru, Ohakune, Tauranga, Ashburton, Dunedin, Hamilton and Kawhia – so there’s been luck all over the country.”
Players can buy a ticket for Saturday’s $38 million Powerball draw in-store at any Lotto store or online at MyLotto.co.nz, with Lotto NZ reminding players to get in early to avoid a queue.
“Most of our stores were very busy after 6pm on Wednesday night. Our tip for players that want to avoid waiting in line – and potentially missing out – is to get in early to grab a ticket for Saturday’s $38 million draw,” said Ms Mazur.
