Singapore Airlines Takes Wellington Phoenix to Canberra for Central Coast Mariners Clash
Singapore Airlines will carry the Wellington Phoenix to their A-league match in Canberra against the Central Coast
Mariners on 12 November. The Phoenix will travel on the airline’s recently launched ‘Capital Express’ service, which
directly connects Wellington to Canberra (and on to Singapore).
Singapore Airlines formed a marketing collaboration with the Wellington Phoenix as part of its efforts to build a closer
connection with the Wellington community before launching its ‘Capital Express’ service in September.
Simon Turcotte, Singapore Airlines General Manager New Zealand, says the Wellington Phoenix were an obvious choice for
the airline to collaborate with.
“Since we’re new to Wellington we wanted to collaborate with some of the capital’s best known attractions and activities
as part of our commitment to the region,” Mr Turcotte said.
“The Phoenix have built very strong community links, a loyal fan base and are known and loved by a broad cross section
of Wellingtonians.
“We could see a nice synergy in the club’s link to Australia through the A-league and our own connection to Australia
thanks to the new ‘Capital Express’ service.
“In addition, football teams travel to play and fans travel to support them, which makes our collaboration with the
Wellington Phoenix a natural fit.”
In support of the Phoenix’s match in Canberra, the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency will be onsite to
provide a taste of New Zealand’s creative – and political – capital with its sister city, Canberra. Key to this ‘taste’
of Wellington will be Wellington-based brewery, Garage Project, who will be pouring at the match courtesy of Singapore
Airlines Cargo, who will transport the Garage Project brew across the ditch. Beer served at GIO stadium will include
some of Garage Project’s more sought after brews such as Hapi Daze, Hakituri Organic Kiwi Pilsner, Garagista IPA and
their Salted White Peach Sour, White Mischief.
Singapore Airlines was introduced to Garage Project through its collaboration with the Phoenix. As a result of the
shared connection, the Garage Project team developed a beer especially for the launch of the new ‘Capital Express’
service.
