Activism in New Zealand has sunk to a new low as conservation workers don’t even feel safe going about their daily jobs.
Federated Farmers is deeply concerned for the safety of the country’s conservation department staff and contractors, as so-called activists continue to ignore the fact that 1080 is working well for New Zealand.
"It is simply unacceptable for New Zealanders who go to work every day to protect our environment, to be made to feel unsafe doing their jobs," says Federated Farmers president Dr William Rolleston.
"This is madness and it’s activism out of control.
"These people, are so called ‘eco-terrorists’ but there’s no ‘eco’ involved at all. Just terror."
Feds notes that the anti-1080 protesters have pronounced this Saturday as ‘Anti 1080 Day’.
"People who turn up to the protest on Saturday must realise they are supporting this un-Kiwi behaviour.
As an alternative, Feds is proposing that Sunday, October 9, become ‘Pro 1080 Day’.
"We suggest people celebrate ‘Pro-1080 Day’ by pulling on their possum fur-lined boots and getting out into some of country’s great open spaces, to enjoy our magnificent trees and priceless bird song.
"Also take a moment to celebrate our healthy stock, our protected forests and the overall reduction in predators.
"At the moment, 1080 is one of the best tools we have for preservation. DoC can be trusted to use it in the best possible way and they should be left alone to get on with their jobs."
