Industry Tourism Award for Tairua B Owner
The Bed and Breakfast Association NEW ZEALAND would like to congratulate their member Sunlover Retreat, Tairua, who have
received an award for Excellence in Service for Tourism on The Coromandel. The Awards were presented at an industry
function last week at Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort and celebrate excellence and quality within all sectors of the
tourism industry throughout The Coromandel region.
Owners Donna and Chris Brook are passionate about the bed and breakfast industry and were delighted at winning the
award. Three years ago when Donna and Chris created their luxury B in Tairua, their vision was to create a home they could share with others, offering guests the experience of “staying
with locals”. Their commitment to offering a memorable visitor experience to every Sunlover guest has launched them into
the coveted top ten in TripAdvisor’s New Zealand Accommodation, B and Inn Category. Currently ranked #9, Sunlover Retreat remains a top player in this category with a 2016 Traveller’s
Choice award. The Coromandel Annual Tourism awards are based on national service awards, including Service IQ and
TripAdvisor Top 10 Rankings in New Zealand.
The secret to Sunlover’s success, according to Donna, is in the little details that create big memories for their
guests. She says people come from all over the world to experience the best the Coromandel has to offer. This compels
her to go the extra mile to make guests feel part of their home, offering many opportunities to savour absolute
relaxation and utmost enjoyment during their stay.
The Association’s recent survey indicated that travellers spent approximately $60 million in bed and breakfast
accommodation for the year ended March 2016. Association President, Kathryn Officer says “The Tourism Report, Tourism
2025, talks extensively about the “uniquely New Zealand experience” – this is what staying at a bed and breakfast is all
about.” 83% of travellers who stay at bed and breakfasts are international visitors and Ms Officer believes that the bed
and breakfast industry has the experience and is well placed to take advantage of the huge increase we are experiencing
in international visitors.
