EQC Chief Executive Ian Simpson is leaving EQC to take up new role
Earthquake Commission Chairman Sir Maarten Wevers announced today that Chief Executive Ian Simpson would leave the
organisation at the end of the year to take up the role of Chief Executive at GNS Science in 2017.
Sir Maarten said that during Ian’s term as Chief Executive, EQC had been required to confront the most significant
challenges since its establishment in 1945.
“Ian joined EQC as Chief Executive in 2010. Over the past six years he has led the organisation’s remarkable and
unprecedented response to the Canterbury Earthquakes - the largest and most costly insurance events in New Zealand’s
history. By any standard the scale of the event, the number and nature of insurance claims lodged and of settlements to
customers has been huge.
“Ian’s leadership of EQC since 4 September 2010 has been outstanding. As so many others did, he stepped up as a leader
to deal with the very difficult circumstances of the time. His contribution has been significant.
“The Board offers Ian its warm thanks, and extends its best wishes as he takes up his new role,” he said.
Sir Maarten said the search for a replacement would begin shortly.
