Countdown teams up with Auckland Transport to trial grocery collection points at key transport facilities
26 September 2016: From tomorrow, Countdown shoppers can order their groceries online in the morning and collect them on the way home when
they catch the train, bus or ferry from five transport facilities across Auckland, saving customers a trip to the
supermarket.
In a first for Auckland, Countdown has teamed up with Auckland Transport (AT) to introduce secure online grocery Click & Collect collection points at the following five transport facilities:
• Albany Bus Station
• New Lynn Transport Centre
• Orakei Train Station
• Matiatia Ferry Terminal (Waiheke Island)
• Downtown Car Park
The service is being rolled out as a six month trial, with a view to offering it in other locations if successful.
Currently the five transport hubs service more than 95,000 AT HOP card users and customers every day.
Countdown’s Head of Online Sally Copland says as Auckland’s population continues to grow, Countdown expects to see an
evolution in the way people shop for groceries.
“Click & Collect lockers and pick up points at transport centres will play a part in making life easy for Aucklanders as the
city continues to grow as a cosmopolitan hub, and more and more people embrace public transport,” says Ms Copland.
“We are already seeing the traditional once-a-week shop being replaced by smaller, more frequent shops. This also means
that supermarket shopping won’t take up as much kitchen storage as customers look to buy more fresh produce regularly,
and will be light enough to carry home as part of the commute home on public transport. The Click & Collect offering at transport facilities aims to make life easy for those commuting to the outer suburbs by saving them
a trip to the supermarket on the way home.”
“Countdown first introduced online grocery shopping 20 years ago and today we fill more than 23,000 online orders each
week. Innovations like our intuitive, personalised online shopping system that remembers your frequently purchased
items, increased delivery times, Click & Collect in every store across the country, and now the Click & Collect trial at Auckland Transport facilities are just some of the ways we’ve made life easier for Kiwi shoppers,” she
adds.
Auckland Transport Chief AT Metro Officer Mark Lambert says “Through this Click & Collect trial we aim to provide our customers with even greater levels of convenience and flexibility, whatever their
mode of transport.
“We’re thrilled to be able to kick off this new initiative with Countdown, who have decades of experience in online
shopping and look forward to expanding this customer amenity throughout our network.” he adds.
Countdown will be offering Click & Collect services at selected locations on the Auckland Transport network from 27 September 2016.
