August 2016 Monthly traffic update
9.3%International passengers (excluding transit passengers) increased by 9.3% to 710,416 in August 2016, compared with
August 2015. Passenger growth was achieved across all regions, but the Americas was particularly strong again (up
27.8%). This growth was once again driven by new services to/from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Buenos Aires.
Visitor arrivals from the United States were up 47.8% on August 2015 and New Zealand resident departures to the United
States were up 6.7%.
12.3%Auckland Airport has had a strong start to the 2017 financial year with total passengers up 12.3% for the financial year
to date. Both international and domestic passengers have significantly exceeded prior year volumes, up 11.4% and 12.2%
respectively. International transit passengers have also increased in the financial year to date (up 26.1%), driven by
passengers travelling between Australia and North/South America, via Auckland.
14%European visitor arrivals were up 14% in August 2016, compared with August 2015. New Zealand tourism continues to
benefit from the increase in one-stop United Kingdom and Europe capacity added through Dubai, Guangzhou, San Francisco,
and Los Angeles in recent months. Several of our traditional visitor markets experienced solid winter season growth in
August 2016, including the United Kingdom (up 6.6%), Germany (up 11%), France (up 17.6%) and Italy (up 35%).95.6%Visitor arrivals from Malaysia were up 95.6% in August 2016, compared with August 2015. Double-daily Kuala
Lumpur-Auckland services by Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X (via Gold Coast), have driven the impressive growth from the
Malaysian market. Visitor arrivals from Malaysia were up 38% for the year ending August 2016, and up 90.3% for the
financial year to date. Just under half of Malaysian travellers are Free Independent Travellers (FIT) and 50.3% travel
outside the main regions when visiting New Zealand.
