They told him he wasn't a model; he took on New York anyway

We all love a bit of inspiration, especially when it's as gorgeous as Patric Seng.

From modelling at the age of 17 to agency owner at just 33, Patric's story is an uplifting roller coaster ride that can inspire us all to keep on going until we get what we want. Three years ago he was told he wasn't model material, but Patric never gave up. And now he has walked the runway at New York Fashion Week 2016.

People tend to forget what it takes to create a career. It's the little bits that build the big foundation – the promo-boy jobs, the underground contemporary dance show, the nothing-part in a TV commercial.

Patric Seng has done all the little jobs and some of the big ones too. He started modelling in Malaysia at age 17. He graced the pages of the highly regarded magazine VMAG, stalked down a few catwalks and did a bit of promotional work for Calvin Klein.

But every model needs to have another trade - one that doesn't rely solely on their devastatingly good looks. So Patric moved to New Zealand to study graphic design at UCOL (Universal College of Learning) in Wanganui. Smarty-pants Patric finished his degree in a year and relocated to Auckland in 2007.

He focused on modelling again while also working as TV talent. In 2009, Patric was delighted to sign with a well-known Auckland agency. But despite his aptitude, unique looks and strong work ethic, the agency continually passed him over for modelling work.

"One shouldn't have limit to their dreams!" says Patric of this period of his life. "But I must say, it takes a lot of courage, confidence and determination. To be a successful model, you have to be ready to make sacrifices and it is indeed a long journey for most people."

After repeatedly asking to be presented for New Zealand Fashion Week and other modelling jobs over the four years he was with the agency, Patric became profoundly discouraged and left. Despite his dreams, he had only managed to walk a Fashion Week runway once during that time, for street-wear brand Egoist in NZ Fashion Week 2012 – and that was an opportunity he had created himself through networking.

This spurred Patric to start his own agency, Bintang Models & Management in 2014. "I truly celebrate models from diverse backgrounds. And in my agency, I do not allow bullying and bitching about each other," laughs Patric. "My vision is for everyone to enjoy their moment on the runway, in print, digital media, TV and film based on their hard work and dedication."

Bintang means 'star', and it's the inspiration for everything Patric does. He wants to remind all the aspiring models out there that they need to believe in themselves, be humble and learn from the best.

"Don't listen to anyone who says you are not good enough, not tall enough, or that you are too fat or too whatever!" says Patric "Imagine if I had listened to my ex agent who told me that I am not a model? I have never given up and now I have walked for New York Fashion Week!"

So, that's another goal achieved for Patric Seng – and he's setting his sights on his next one!
