Plunket Announces New Chief Executive

Plunket’s new Chief Executive Amanda Malu says the greatest social good is achieved by investing in a child’s earliest years - and that by investing in our children, we are investing in our future.

The announcement of the new appointment was made today by Acting New Zealand President Christine Lake, who says that the Board was delighted to be able to appoint someone of Amanda’s calibre and experience.

“Plunket is at the beginning of an ambitious work programme to adapt to the changing needs of New Zealand families. It was born in the early 1900s and has been instrumental in developing essential health and social services for Kiwi children and their families ever since.

“We want to continue with this tradition so that we are as relevant now as we have been in the past. This means responding to the growing diversity of our population, targeting our resources, and ensuring that what we do is provided equitably across the country.

“Amanda is passionate about the opportunity that Plunket has to make a real difference in the lives of all children and their families. She also has the skills and determination to lead the organisation in bringing about real change.”

Ms Malu, who has been acting Chief Executive since March, says she is committed to bringing to life the charity’s vision that in the first 1000 days of a child’s life, Plunket makes the difference of a lifetime.

“Researched evidence shows just how important the first 1000 days are in a child’s life, and how critical Plunket’s work is in that period. For children in families that are struggling to cope, early intervention is vital – the earlier the better.

“Poverty, overcrowded housing and poor parenting skills all contribute to New Zealand’s high rates of abuse, neglect and ill health for many of our children. Plunket is committed to turning this around.

“Obviously, we can’t do it alone, but Plunket is in a trusted position. We are welcomed into the homes of about 90 percent of children born in this country. We are increasing our efforts and our focus on ensuring every child has the chance to be as healthy as possible, that we help build confident families and whānau, and that they are connected within their communities. We want to make sure that no family is left isolated, disconnected or unable to cope.

“Our goal is to be there for every child born in New Zealand so that they get the best possible start in life. We are passionate about improving the lives of Kiwi children and we have a strong, proud history that demonstrates our importance to New Zealand families.”

Ms Malu, who was previously Plunket’s Chief Marketing Officer, has held senior management roles at the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) and the Families Commission. Her appointment is with immediate effect.
