Award-winning chefs enjoy a taste of Auckland

Top Australian chefs Paul Carmichael and Guy Grossi have been taking some time out from the kitchen to explore Auckland’s stunning scenery and sample the best of the food scene in New Zealand’s largest city.

Carmichael took to the air by seaplane as part of his Auckland taster, landing at the award-winning Man O’ War vineyard on Waiheke Island to sample the wine and food which has earned it international acclaim.

“Auckland is awesome. I’ve had some great meals, and the people have been super cool and hospitable. I just wish I had more time here, but I’m definitely coming back.” [check out the video for more https://youtu.be/gjLzVX1ivkw]

Carmichael’s whirlwind trip topped off what’s been an exciting few weeks for the executive chef whose restaurant, Momofuku Seiōbo in Sydney, has just been named Australia’s Restaurant of the Year at the 2016 Gourmet Traveller restaurant awards.

Kiwis had the opportunity to see the Caribbean-born master chef in action when he worked alongside Auckland chefs, Ben Bayly and Michael Dearth from leading local restaurant The Grove, as part of Auckland Restaurant Month’s ‘International Chef Dining Series’.

Grossi also paid a visit to Auckland serving up his own version for the Chef Dining Series, featuring alongside Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett at another top local restaurant, Ostro.
The Melbourne-based chef is extending his stay to see more of New Zealand but has already managed to experience Auckland’s world-class dining scene, dining at Clooney and The Store so far and planning to visit Waiheke Island and more of the region’s restaurants.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Head of Tourism, Jason Hill, said Auckland’s food scene has really taken off, further strengthening Auckland’s appeal as a holiday destination.

“Auckland is building a strong reputation as a world-class dining destination thanks to its vibrant and diverse food scene. We’re fortunate to have some fantastic internationally acclaimed chefs working here making the most of local produce and putting their own unique New Zealand flavour on Auckland menus,” he said.

“When you combine our culinary offerings with the exciting experiences on the city’s doorstep – wine regions, pristine beaches, native forest, the stunning islands in the Hauraki Gulf – Auckland really is the perfect place for a short-break getaway.”
