New Tug scheduled to arrive this Thursday
Port Otago’s new $6 million tug, the Arihi, is scheduled to arrive in Port Chalmers on Thursday 25 August following a two month, 16,000 kilometre voyage from Tuzla in Turkey as deck cargo on the specialised cargo ship the MV Deltagracht.
The 18.7 m Arihi, which has a 30-tonne bollard pull, will join Port Otago’s larger tugs the Otago and Taiaroa as back-up for ship moves but primarily as a work-boat to tow the barge Hapuka.
With the Deltagracht scheduled to arrive about 8:00am, it is expected the Arihi will be offloaded from 10:00am. The Dutch-registered Deltagracht has cranes on board which will lift the tug and other cargo including a privately owned yacht, into the water.
The best viewing opportunity for Interested members of the public will be from the Flagstaff Hill lookout in Port Chalmers.
Geoff Plunket, Port Otago Chief Executive said, “together the Arihi and Hapuka represent an important addition to Port Otago’s dredging equipment which will support both the ongoing dredging within the Dunedin port area and the deepening programme which is currently underway.”
