E tū working with Amcor to minimise job losses following plant closure
E tū will be working to minimise job losses and to support workers at Amcor Flexibles NZ Ltd, following today’s announcement that the firm’s Carmen Road plant is to close.
Nearly 30 E tū members face redundancy, after the company’s decision to consolidate its operations at its Branston Street site.
42 workers are expected to be redeployed at the Branston Street plant.
E tū Industry Co-ordinator, Joe Gallagher says it’s never good when jobs are lost and “this will come as a blow.
“These are well-paid jobs, and highly qualified people who have been very loyal and committed to the business.”
The closure is the latest in a series to affect the Hornby area.
However, Joe says there are commercial realities in terms of a tight, competitive market, with the company losing work over the last couple of years.
There will be no job losses until after Christmas, with a gradual shut-down of production at Carmen Road, with the process due for completion by the end of 2017.
Joe says the union will be working with the company “to follow that time-line, to minimise job losses, and to ensure the transition is as painless as possible.
“That includes work to place workers who lose their jobs with other companies. We’ll be here to help where needed.”
