E tū joins Pacific Steel call for swift action over Chinese steel
E tū has joined Pacific Steel in calling for immediate government action over alleged steel dumping by China.
E tū’s Industry Co-ordinator, Joe Gallagher says a complaint has been lodged but it will be many months before the government responds – if an inquiry proceeds, “and that’s far from certain.”
“Meanwhile, jobs and the very future of our steel industry are at stake”, he says.
“We care about New Zealand manufacturers, New Zealand jobs and New Zealand communities.”
He says E tū supports Pacific Steel’s call for a law change allowing swift government action where issues are in the public interest “as this most definitely is.
“What could be more in the public interest when local jobs and the health of the entire community are at stake?
“When is John Key going to come out and support New Zealand and its economy? Now is the hour. The Government needs to step up.”
