Treasury chief economist leaves living standards legacy

Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf has congratulated Chief Economist Girol Karacaoglu on his appointment as Victoria University of Wellington’s new Head of School of Government. Dr Karacaoglu begins his new role on 3 October.

“Dr Karacaoglu has made an outstanding contribution to the Treasury in the four years he’s been with us. We are particularly grateful for his thought leadership and his work on the Living Standards Framework,” says Mr Makhlouf.

“He played a big role in the development of the Framework, which is the platform of the Treasury’s policy advice. He has helped embed social and environmental considerations in the development of our economic and financial advice and applied an interdisciplinary focus to our work to achieve higher living standards for New Zealanders.

“This interdisciplinary focus runs strongly through the Treasury’s thinking on the investment approach and the way we address significant policy issues.

“I’m pleased that Dr Karacaoglu is committed to building on the work he’s done and the connections he’s made as our Chief Economist when he takes up his position as Head of School of Government. We look forward to continuing to work with him.”

The Treasury has started the process of finding a successor for the Chief Economist role.
