Hawkins win contract for final stage of SH16 Motorway Upgrade

The sod turning ceremony for the Lincoln to Westgate Motorway Upgrade took place in West Auckland last Friday. This is the final stage of the State Highway 16 Northwestern Motorway upgrade. Hawkins has been awarded the $100M contract for this significant New Zealand Transport Agency project.

Widening the motorway from 2 to 3 lanes between Lincoln Road and Westgate will support growth in the western suburbs and the potential increase in traffic using the Western Ring Route and Waterview tunnels, scheduled to open in early 2017.

“The Transport Agency is looking forward to continuing our successful relationship with Hawkins Infrastructure to deliver this project which will create great transport infrastructure to make it easier to get around Auckland and cater for the growing population in the west of the city,” says Brett Gliddon, the Transport Agency’s Auckland Highway Manager.

“Hawkins Infrastructure is delighted to win this contract and proud of successfully delivering a number of jobs for the Transport Agency recently, including the Nelson Street Cycleway, Grafton Gully in Auckland and the current realignment of State Highway 73 within Arthurs Pass National Park,” says Rory Bishop, General Manager NZ Operations, Hawkins Infrastructure.

The Northwestern Motorway upgrade is part of the larger Western Ring Route, one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance designed to provide an alternative route to SH1 and move people and freight more safely and efficiently.

The project will deliver 2.1km of additional motorway lanes including a bus shoulder and three new bridges. A designated shared cycleway and pedestrian path 2.9km long will connect communities and provide more leisure and commuting opportunities.
