14 hiring hotspots in New Zealand

If a new job is on your radar you’ll be glad to hear that employers are interested in your skills – provided they include expertise in business development, digital projects or business analysis.

DevOps Engineers, Registered Architects and Quantity Surveyors are also included on the list of 14 hiring hotspots, released today by recruiting experts Hays.

“New jobs are being created in many industries and sectors, and 74% of employers say the skill shortage will impact the effective operation of their business or department,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.

“We may not be a ‘rock star’ economy anymore, but employers are recruiting and vacancy activity is strong. New Zealand’s construction boom continues to drive activity in construction and related industries, especially in Auckland and to a lesser degree in Wellington and Christchurch. Organisations say business activity is on the rise, and the latest data from SEEK Employment Trends shows positive results for the majority of sectors across New Zealand,” he said.

So which skills are employers in most need of? The Hays Quarterly Report for July to September 2016 names the following hotspots of hiring activity:

Accountancy & Finance: New jobs are being created and organisations need people who can explain analysis to non-technical audiences. Finance and Business Analysts, Commercial Managers and Commercial Accountants are in demand, as are Management Accountants who can go beyond the financial accounts, Assistant Accountants and Company Accountants.

Architecture: Most regions in New Zealand are very busy, and employers are hiring based on increased workflow, especially Registered Architects able to run projects and lead teams, Architectural Technicians, Revit Technicians, Project Architects and Interior Designers.

Construction: Increased residential construction is fuelling demand for Quantity Surveyors and Forepersons. There is also high demand for Site Managers in the new build commercial construction space as well as intermediate to senior Project Managers to work on fit-out and refurbishment projects.

Contact Centres: The contact centre market continues to experience a high level of vacancy activity, with Telesales Consultants, Outbound Customer Service Representatives and Inbound Customer Service Representatives with cross selling skills all sought.

Engineering: Increased residential, commercial and infrastructure developments are creating demand for Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Civil 3D Designers, Senior CPEng Design Engineers and Revit Technicians/Drafters.

Facilities Management: The facilities management market remains buoyant in New Zealand with a shortage at the intermediate Facilities Manager level and for candidates with both technical and soft skills.

Information Technology: DevOps Engineers are in high demand since when the communication between testing, infrastructure and development is aligned, the time required to produce high quality code is reduced. .Net Developers, Java Developers, UI and UX Designers, Business Intelligence Consultants, Digital Business Analysts and E-commerce and Mobility candidates also amongst those in demand.

Insurance: Broker support candidates are needed across the country. Claims and recoveries are in continuous demand while Life Undewriters and health insurance candidates are sought.

Marketing: Digital Project Managers who can work effectively with marketing, creative and development teams are in high demand, as are Marketing Managers with knowledge of digital and marketing automation platforms. Marketing Analysts, Digital Media Planner Buyers and proven E-Commerce Specialists are also all needed.

Office Support: While the availability of job opportunities and good quality candidates is well balanced in most areas, we are seeing demand for Team Administrators who are the right personality fit for the team. Executive Assistants and Receptionists are needed too.

Property: New Zealand’s property industry is booming. Professional Project Managers are in high demand from intermediate to senior level with New Zealand experience. Property Advisors who are acquisitions and disposals specialists and Property Advisors in land and asset management are also sought.

Sales: Demand for business development specialists has increased as businesses strengthen their sales force to generate revenue. Candidates with specific industry experience, particularly manufacturing, engineering or construction, are in greatest demand. Technical sales specialists are also sought.

Trades & Labour: Most regions are experiencing increased construction activity. Carpenters, Builders, Plumbers, Electricians and Machine Operators are all sought. Certified and CCC approved Drain Layers and Senior Concrete Cutters are needed too, as are Senior Cable Joiners.
