Kiwi families on the move these school holidays
Family favourite getaway spots, bargain prices and the dropping value of the pound are luring families to travel these
school holidays, with more than 40,000 Kiwis departing Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington from 8-21 July.
Nathan Graham, Regional Sales Manager at Cheapflights ANZ, explains:
“Cheapflights.co.nz search data shows New Zealanders continue to flock across the Tasman with sunny Australian east coast destinations of
Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney top picks this winter break – and with flights available for as little as $320, $220 and
$288 respectively, this comes as no surprise.
“Internationally, the warmer climes of Fiji and England are also attracting travellers overseas, and the recent Zika
virus warning isn’t dampening the appeal of Bali with the destination rounding out the top three hot spots.
“Closer to home, the favoured locations are Queenstown, Christchurch and Auckland with flights available for as little
as $80. While there could be many reasons for choosing a staycation, it does suggest that many families are looking to
combine fun and affordability during the peak school holiday travel period.
“It’s also evident from the results that many are taking full advantage of the school break with a longer trip – a seven
night stay being the most common (27 per cent), followed by fourteen (20 per cent) and eight nights (12 per cent).
“And while there have been a significant number of families searching to depart prior to the school holidays, the vast
majority are still travelling during the break.
“Our advice for anyone getting away: plan ahead and be prepared for the crowds! Auckland airport will be the busiest
with more than 85 percent of travellers set to pass through its gates, the largest majority (12 per cent) jetting off
this Saturday.”
