Community Corrections congratulates course graduates in Paeroa

Five graduates from a Community Corrections hospitality course are now looking forward to improved career prospects, with two already securing employment in the industry.

To date, the Paeroa Community Corrections site has run four of the courses which has seen 25 people serving community work sentences achieve NZQA certificates in Personal Presentation and Health and Hygiene.

Probation Officer Moa Pangnem, who is a registered and qualified assessor for Service IQ, delivers the training on site.

“We know that stable employment can decrease someone’s chances of reoffending as well as helping them to support their whānau and be a contributing member of society. This course supports people looking for work in the hospitality industry, but it can also be handy for any line of work.”

The five graduates were awarded their certificates at a small ceremony at the Community Corrections site this month.

The feedback from participants has been very positive, with several commenting how the training will help them in their future.

“I have learnt the importance of presentation in preparing food/hospitality and how it influences the customer experience,” said one graduate. Another reflected that they “have learned that the first impressions last and that the customer always comes first if you want to be in the hospitality trade.”

The hospitality course is part of the Department of Corrections commitment to providing effective and coordinated support to offenders that will enable them to gain skills, knowledge and motivation towards gaining meaningful employment.
