NZGBC gets 'excellent' NABERSNZ rating

NZGBC benchmarks its office performance with 'excellent' NABERSNZ rating

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) has achieved a 4.5 NABERSNZ Tenant rating for its Auckland office, proving once again a commitment to the rating programmes they offer.

NABERSNZ is a system for rating the energy efficiency of office buildings. It is an independent tool, backed by the New Zealand government.

The NZGBC moved into its office at 205 Queen Street in November 2014, completing a fit-out that achieved a 5 Green Star Interior fit-out rating in April 2015. The offices are intended to be a welcoming drop-in space for NZGBC members, as well as an inspiring and functional venue for events and training. Another key aim of the office was to provide a public showcase for Green Star Interiors.

NZGBC Chief Executive Alex Cutler says, “We really believe in our rating tools and the long-term benefits that they bring. Getting a NABERSNZ energy performance rating was the next logical step for NZGBC, and our rating demonstrates that we are walking the talk. Now that we’ve measured our office’s energy use, we’re looking to find ways to achieve further efficiencies and improve our rating next year.”

The 4.5 NABERSNZ Tenant rating, denoting excellent performance, was signed off today (June 30, 2016). Although NZGBC certifies NABERSNZ ratings, it was subject to the same independent, robust process that every project goes through: Kane Tarrant, a qualified Assessor from Colliers International, carried out the assessment.

Tarrant says, “An assessment like this one takes relatively little time, but provides a benchmark for energy performance. Ultimately, NABERSNZ helps organisations understand the factors that affect energy performance and work toward continuous improvement.”

The effectiveness of the NABERSNZ rating system was highlighted at the recent EECA Awards, where Te Puni Kōkiri and Argosy Property won the Opus International Consultants Public Sector Award for the extensive internal retrofit and consequent 4.5 NABERSNZ rating of Te Puni Kōkiri House in Wellington – demonstrating an operational saving of $80,000 per year to Te Puni Kōkiri.

NABERSNZ is also showcased in the latest episode of the Bayleys Total Property on Demand series, which demonstrates how energy efficiency ratings are being used to benefit office investors, developers, landlords and tenants.
