Huawei P9 Achieves Record Demand in the Premium Market
Premium Products Boost NZ Device Values 92 Percent
New Zealand, (June 30, 2016) – Huawei’s latest flagship smartphones, the P9 and P9 Plus, have achieved unprecedented success since the official launch in London with global shipments exceeding 2.6 million within six weeks of release.
In addition to the strong shipment numbers, demand for the P9 remains high. In China, over 5 million online pre-orders were made within a week of the devices’ public reveal.
Early sales of the P9 are 130 percent higher than its predecessor the P8 in global markets. These outstanding results have increased Huawei’s global market share to 8.5 percent^ and cemented the company’s top-three position in the smartphone industry.
The P9 series launched in New Zealand this month, expanding Huawei’s high-end device portfolio which has delivered strong growth over the past 12 months. While Huawei New Zealand’s smartphone sales have grown well above the market average, increasing 53 percent in the year to March, a key figure has been a 92 percent increase in the value of devices sold.
Huawei NZ CEO Jason Wu said this showed perception of the brand was evolving rapidly.
“We are very grateful to see New Zealanders are now recognising Huawei as a brand which delivers high-quality, cutting-edge products. There has been a significant increase in demand for Huawei’s high-end devices, and with the incredible new P9 Series we hope this will continue as more people discover the level of innovation Huawei brings.”
Huawei collaborated with Leica Camera AG to create the P9’s and P9 Plus’s signature dual-lens camera, resulting in aesthetically-stunning devices that deliver amazing true-to-life colour pictures. The dual-lens camera takes smartphone photography to the next level, allowing users to capture both vivid colours and striking black and white images.
Globally, during Q1 2016, Huawei shipped 28.3 million units, a 64 percent^ increase year-on-year.
“Huawei is focused on creating premium devices that exhibit our dedication to flawless design and technological innovation,” said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “These high end devices are attracting more fans than ever before, who want to use the latest and most innovative smartphone technology. When consumers around the world are lining up to be the first to buy Huawei’s flagship smartphones, as they have for the P9 and P9 Plus, it's clear the appeal of our devices is universal.”
