Spring Sheep Milk Company Finalist in World Dairy Innovation Awards
28 June 2016 – A New Zealand company, within its first year of operation, has been named as a finalist in two categories in theWorld Dairy Innovation Awards; Best Ice Cream or Frozen Yoghurt and Best Dairy Packaging Design.
Spring Sheep Milk Co is the only fully New Zealand owned large scale sheep dairy operation and the attraction for forming the company was to create a model to bring the goodness of New Zealand sheep milk products to the world says Chief Executive Officer Scottie Chapman
“Consumers are looking for quality alternatives to traditional dairy and sheep milk offers a premium alternative thanks to its sensational taste. It is richer and creamier than traditional cows milk. Sheep milk has been used in Europe for centuries as a gastronomic indulgence, renowned for quality cheeses and is now a rapidly growing category worldwide.”
The majority of Spring Sheep Milk Co’s milk is made into nutritional milk products for the Asian market but Chapman says that, knowing Kiwis love affair with ice cream, it was something they were keen to produce.
“When you think of your favourite ice cream there’s a good chance Murray Taylor has been involved with creating it so we approached him to help us. He’s got over 40 years’ experience but this was the first time he’d worked with sheep milk.”
Taylor created a Dark Chocolate and a Vanilla Bean gelato and says he’s been impressed with sheep milk.
“It makes great tasting gelato because its such a rich, creamy milk. It’s a finalist at world level for good reason - these flavours will be winners when they launch. It’s a great product and I’m very proud to be associated with it.”
Spring Sheep Milk Co was established in June 2015 and is a partnership between Landcorp, and boutique sales and marketing company SLC.
“It’s a great initiative as it combines the best farming know-how and resources from Landcorp along with SLC’s branding and market expertise. Being named as a finalist in two categories alongside major companies around the world in only our first year definitely shows we are on the right track.”
Spring Sheep Milk Co is looking to develop more products following the launch of their gelato in Spring 2016.
The World Dairy Innovation Awards are in their tenth year and are designed to celebrate excellence and innovation across every category of the global dairy industry. The winners will be announced in London on June 28 (June 29 New Zealand Time), as part of the 2016 Global Dairy Congress.
