The New Zealand Herald Continue to Grow Print Readership in recent survey
23 June 2016 – New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME) has seen its second consecutive period of readership growth in the Q2, 2015 to Q1, 2016 survey, the results of which were released today.
Based on the latest Nielsen readership results, The New Zealand Herald’s average weekday readership has increased by 1.7% to 411,000 and the Weekend Herald increased by 30,000 to hit the 442,000 mark, reflecting higher engagement with the newspaper in addition to strong population growth in the Auckland region. The Herald on Sunday saw 10,000 more readers, growing readership to 311,000 and has maintained its place as the best read Sundaynewspaper.*
Helping drive the growth in readers for the Weekend Herald were Canvas, with a significant increase of 23,000 readers, and Weekend Magazine, now with 9,000 more readers. Canvas now reaches 300,000 Kiwis each week, with Weekend Magazine enjoyed by 301,000 readers. The recently launched new design of the magazines and the addition of Annabel Langbein as the weekly food columnist for Canvas leave the team confident this growth will continue.
New Zealand Herald’s Weekend Editor Miriyana Alexander is thrilled with the result. “We know our readers have busy lives, and we’re proud to produce publications people want to read and engage with on their precious weekends. Herald on Sunday keeping its top spot shows the readers are really responding to it!”
The newspaper magazines in the New Zealand Herald saw growth on every day of the week: Bite saw a 6.4% increase, Viva increased by 5.6%, TimeOut went up 3.3%, Travel had a 1.0% increase and The Business saw a 1.1% increase in readership.*
Murray Kirkness, Weekday Editor of the New Zealand Herald, says the increase across all newspaper-inserted magazines shows the diversity of the paper’s readers. “Having an increase across the board in our newspaper magazines is great, and shows we’re hitting different target audiences within the wider New Zealand Herald offering. While there will be some people who read everything, we know that those people who just want to get their hands on Bite or The Business are enjoying the content.”
NZME’s regional daily newspapers now reach 164,000 kiwis, with growth of 2,000 more readers, even though total regional newspaper readership declined by 2,000.*
NZME Chief Commercial Officer Laura Maxwell says the continued growth is a testament to the quality of the publications. “To have an increase in readership across the board is an incredible result. It allows our advertisers to align with NZME audiences on a national scale, and the readers are connecting and engaging with our strong brands right across our channels. ”
