Spy Valley Envoy represents New Zealand in the skies

Spy Valley’s remarkable run as wine supplier of choice for British Airways’ first class service continues, this month winning the tender to provide Pinot Noir for first class passengers.

The Marlborough winery’s 2014 Envoy Outpost Vineyard Pinot Noir will be served on the airline’s Asia routes this year and next.

Peter Rawling, Spy Valley’s Global Sales Manager, says it is a privilege to serve British Airway’s premium customers.

“Many wineries achieve medals, trophies and high scores, but very few enjoy the prestige of being served in British Airways’ First Class, enjoyed by royalty and rock stars at 40,000 feet,” he says.

Paul Bourgeois, Spy Valley’s Chief Winemaker, says “British Airways values unique wines not widely available in retailers, and those with high award scores. Grown in our north facing, European style Outpost vineyard, the Envoy grapes were hand harvested, partially de-stemmed and fermented with wild yeasts in small open fermenters. The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels in our devoted Pinot Noir cellar. It is identifiable by its black cherry, dried plum and incense bouquet,” says Bourgeois.

Bourgeois says this reinforces the presence of Marlborough as one of the top Pinot Noir growing regions of the world and it is excellent for Marlborough’s reputation.

Spy Valley’s Envoy Johnson Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc has been poured in the First Class Cabin for the last four years.
