What’s The Measure Of Small-Business Success?
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are well recognised as the backbone of the New Zealand economy, but what motivates their owners? Is success about “the bach, boat and BMW” or something quite different?
Those questions are at the heart of a research project unveiled today by Bauer Media in partnership with accounting software company Xero.
While simple financial yardsticks are often employed by outside analysts, the project asks Kiwi SME owners themselves about what success means for them.
It probes the relative importance of measures such as growth, leaving a legacy, “making a difference”, financial freedom and reputation. What exactly are their business goals and are they achieving them? And how closely do their business dreams match their personal ambitions?
The research is being conducted with participants recruited by Bauer Media’s insights department. Results will be revealed over the coming issues of New Zealand Listener, North & South, Next and Kia Ora.
