INFINZ Industry Awards Recognises Excellence in Capital Markets
The 2016 INFINZ Industry Awards were celebrated on Thursday 19 May at a gala black-tie dinner at The Langham Hotel in Auckland. A record 820 guests enjoyed an evening celebrating excellence in the capital markets industry in New Zealand.
Rob Everett, Chief Executive of the Financial Markets Authority, delivered the keynote address.
An inaugural Distinguished Fellowship was presented to Sir John Anderson. Sir John has had an outstanding career in the financial services industry and in the wider community with Chief Executive and Director positions at Southpac, National Bank and the ANZ. He sits on seven boards, has been New Zealand Chairman of the World Wide Fund for Nature, Chair of the multi-party Employment Task Force in 1994 and Chair of New Zealand Cricket.
A Fellowship was presented to David Bell, GM ASB Business Ventures, for his role in delivery of programmes bringing the capital markets eco-system together, including serving as Chairman of the annual INFINZ Conference.
Thirteen awards were presented to finance professionals and corporate leaders to recognise excellence in their respective categories. The Awards are facilitated by the Institute of Finance Professionals in New Zealand Inc (INFINZ), an association representing over 1,200 professionals operating in the capital markets in New Zealand.
An Emerging Leaders Award was introduced following the extraordinary growth of the Young Finance Professionals group which has grown to 500 members since its inception two years ago. Sponsored by The University of Auckland Business School, this award recognises the importance of the under-35 age group of professionals in the capital markets eco-system.
Don Braid was awarded the Caldwell Partners Leadership Award. Acknowledged for his depth of industry knowledge and understanding, Don has implemented the Mainfreight board’s long-range strategy to become the best in its business and has helped the company to become a global supply chain business with over 240 branches around the world offering sophisticated logistics solutions. Over the five years to 31 March 2015, annual revenue rose 53% to $2.1 billion and the share price has almost doubled.
“The INFINZ Awards are directed at raising standards in the capital markets in New Zealand, thereby enhancing the capacity for NZ businesses to raise debt and equity and grow the economy,” says Jim McElwain, Executive Director of INFINZ (the Institute of Finance Professionals New Zealand Inc.).
Many of the award categories are determined by judging nominations from the industry, with 30 experienced professionals having acted as judges, contributing their time and energy to determine the awards in the areas in which they have special expertise.
In addition, some awards are determined through voting. Fifteen leading fund managers are polled to determine the broking-related awards, including that of the Research Analyst of the Year. These institutions and the research analysts from the five full-service share broking firms operating in New Zealand are polled for the Market Leaders Best Corporate Communicator Award.
“The focus of the judges and the industry is on those actions and individuals who have added most value to corporate New Zealand and hence the economy,” commented Jim McElwain.
