Better access to fast data services for Lake Okareka locals

Lake Okareka and Tarawera residents and visitors to the area will soon be able to do even more with their mobile phones, as Spark switches on its service on the Government’s new Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) cell tower.

Spark will be delivering 3G to the area, as well as 4G on the 700MHz spectrum to improve mobile services which will be available from early June.

General Manager of Networks Colin Brown says, “We’re giving customers living in the Lake Okareka area better access to mobile services so they can do things online, faster and easier, like sharing and downloading files while out and about and taking advantage of cloud-based software and services.”

Spark’s 4G coverage across the Lake Okareka area utilises the 700MHz radio spectrum, which means customers who have previously experienced slow internet speeds on a fixed line may now be able to sign up to Spark’s Wireless Broadband service.

“4G on the 700MHz spectrum is ideal for rural residents as the signal can travel further from the cell site than other frequencies. Our Wireless Broadband product uses the 4G mobile network and allows customers fast, reliable and affordable internet access. This is key for people who currently lack access to an adequate fixed internet service” said Mr Brown.
