New Airways appointment to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint
Airways New Zealand has announced today that it will play a top role in minimising the environmental impacts of aviation
by heading up ASPIRE– the Asia and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions.
Tim Boyle, Airways Head of Auckland Operations, has been appointed Chairman of the initiative.
The news comes as senior aviation leaders from around the world are in Queenstown to discuss the efficiency and
environmental sustainability of aviation in the Asia Pacific region. The talks are part of the Civil Air Navigation
Services Organisation (CANSO) Asia Pacific Conference, due to wrap up today.
Through ASPIRE, Airways works with airlines and other partners to develop operational procedures and standards for
flights which limit fuel burn and carbon emissions. Other ASPIRE partners are Airservices Australia, the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA), the Japan Air Navigation Service, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and AeroThai.
“Asia Pacific is the world’s biggest aviation market and managing the environmental consequences of this are a challenge
that needs to be met. Airways is a founding member of ASPIRE and is delivering a number of airspace enhancements that
contribute to sustainability in the industry,” Mr Boyle says. “This appointment is a great opportunity for us to help
shape conversations on the issue in a much wider context.”
Since its formation in 2008, ASPIRE has developed more than 20 daily city pair ‘green routes’ based on best practices.
More than 50 aircraft per day are now benefiting from the optimisation these routes offer.
“It’s encouraging that many ASPIRE best practices have become business as usual. Over the next year, ASPIRE will be
working on a number of new initiatives and we look forward to reporting on their success in the future,”Mr Boyle says.
