Launch of new New Zealand defence and national security magazine
The end of April saw the launch of Line of Defence Magazine – New Zealand’s new and only defence and national security business magazine. The quarterly magazine, published by Defsec Media Limited, will be available in print to subscribers and online.
According to publisher Craig Flint, the launch of the new title is timely. “After two decades of providing the security industry with a vehicle to promote safety and standards to New Zealand and with the production of Fire NZ", he stated, “there was still a gap that needed to be filled, and that was defence.”
“It’s our objective that the magazine become the New Zealand defence industry’s voice – and a force multiplier in the projection of that voice to national and international audiences,” stated managing editor Nick Dynon.
“The threats faced in today’s national security setting – and the solutions required to address them – require complex policy and operational responses that transcend the traditional military domain,” he commented. “Accordingly, Line of Defence will reflect an understanding that contemporary national security requires the deployment of solutions across the broad national security 'ecosystem', including defence, diplomacy, intelligence, border and aviation security, biosecurity, cyber security, counter terrorism, emergency management and critical national infrastructure protection.”
This ecosystem is reflected in the structure and content of the new magazine, with dedicated sections for defence, international security, border security and homeland security.
Line of Defence also brings together the insights and views of business, military, government and academia within the one publication. “The magazine will be a clearing house of ideas from a revolving door of respected thinkers, rather than merely acting as a mouthpiece for limited interests,” said Mr Dynon.
In this inaugural issue, Dr Peter Greener of the Victoria University of Wellington looks at what we can expect from the 2016 Defence White Paper, Dr Damien Rogers of Massey University assesses New Zealand’s membership of the UN Security Council, and Prof Robert Patman of the University of Otago analyses the implications of recent GCSB surveillance controversies.
‘Resilience’ – and our search for it – is a theme that permeates the pages of this issue, with Jason Brown of Thales looking at the role of security in building organisational and national resilience, and Dr Bridgette Sullivan-Taylor of the University of Auckland considering the ‘paradox of connectedness’ in the wake of terror attacks in Paris and Brussels. The magazine also features articles by Debbie Howarth, Director, Industry Engagement, NZDF, and Bernie Diver, Chair, NZ Defence Industry Association.
