Tourism trade show opens new opportunities for Rotorua
Rotorua – 2 May 2016
Millions of dollars’ worth of new tourism business will be negotiated in Rotorua next week as the city hosts New Zealand’s annual tourism trade show.
The $30 billion tourism industry’s premier international trade show, TRENZ, is taking place in Rotorua for the second year running. Travel and tourism buyers from around the world will attend and tens of millions of dollars’ worth of new tourism business will be negotiated over the course of three days.
Destination Rotorua Trade Manager Patrick Dault says a positive experience for these influential buyers could have a huge impact on the growth of Rotorua’s visitor industry, the region’s largest employer.
To ensure that these key influencers make the most of their time in Rotorua a number of local functions and activities have been arranged over the course of the event to provide exposure to the local tourism offering and Rotorua’s vibrant inner city.
The financial rewards of TRENZ are felt in communities throughout the country for years after the event, says Chris Roberts, Chief Executive of the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) which manages TRENZ.
To put the value of Rotorua’s visitor industry into perspective, a 2015 study of nine local hotels published by the Rotorua Tourism Industry Association member hotels showed that almost 60% of their operating expenses and capital expenditure had a local linkage to the Rotorua community. This amounted to more than $30 million per year or $90,000 per day being distributed amongst employees, spent on locally supplied food and beverages, paid out to Rotorua contractors on repairs, capital expenditure or marketing and funding local services.
“Tourism is, and always has been, incredibly important to our district’s economic sustainability,” Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick says.
“I know that the flow-on business created through TRENZ 2016 will have a positive impact on our local tourism operators and our community,” she says.
“We are proud to host TRENZ in Rotorua for the second year running.
“Rotorua is the heartland of cultural tourism, the established mecca for mountain biking and the traditional home of natural hot springs and wellness and this event gives our local tourism industry and community a wonderful chance to show international travel and tourism buyers the true meaning of manaakitanga.”
TRENZ brings together New Zealand tourism operators (exhibitors) with targeted international travel and tourism buyers and media from New Zealand’s key established and emerging tourism markets. Hosted by Destination Rotorua, TRENZ 2016 is being held at the Energy Events Centre Rotorua, 10-13 May 2016.
The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) manages TRENZ on behalf of the Tourism Industry New Zealand Trust. TRENZ is supported by Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand and other industry partners.
