New World Beer & Cider Awards winners start selling out

Media Release

New World Beer & Cider Awards winners start selling out

Shoppers have been quick to snap up brews that won top honours in the New World Beer & Cider Awards, with three Gold Medal winners now close to selling out.

The 13 “Best in Class” winners have only been available for 10 days at all New World supermarkets but three are expected to start selling out due to heavy demand. They are:

• Garage Project’s Los Lobos – which won best American-style Ale
• Sparks Brewing’s Prospector Farmhouse Ale – best European-style Ale
• Kereru Brewing’s Imperial Nibs – best Experimental, Aged, Fruit & Flavoured Beer

Chair of the independent judges, beer writer Michael Donaldson, says the demand for these three winners in particular shows Kiwis are keen to test their taste buds.

“We know how popular Garage Project is so it’s no surprise to see people clamouring for what is an exceptional beer,” he said.

“It’s a slightly different story with Kereru and Sparks, which are relatively unknown breweries, but it shows the beer they are making – while not what you’d call mainstream – has popular appeal.”

“The fact all three are now close to selling out proves the success of the New World Beer and Cider Awards at showcasing smaller breweries and making their interesting brews available to shoppers nationwide.”

He says all three fulfilled the competition’s volume requirements but demand is outstripping supply.

“These are small brewers making world-class products in small batches.”

Donaldson is advising shoppers to keep an eye out for gold medal winners in their local New World, and if they can’t find any of the three listed above, to give some of the other winners a try:

• Eagle Brewing Coalface Stout
• Emerson’s Bookbinder
• Epic Armageddon IPA
• Epic Pale Ale
• Good George Brewing Doris Cider
• Moa Brewing Southern Alps White IPA
• Peroni Leggera
• Steinlager Pure
• The Hills Cider Company Pear Cider
• Tuatara Bohemian Pilsner

In addition, 27 “Highly Commended” Gold medal winners can be found in selected New Worlds.
