Qatar flights to deliver $198m for NZ economy

Auckland Airport has welcomed the announcement by Qatar Airways that it will start a daily service between Doha and Auckland in December 2016. The service will operate using a B777 aircraft.

Norris Carter, Auckland Airport’s general manager – aeronautical commercial, says, “We are delighted by the news that Qatar Airways will start flying to New Zealand later this year, and that the airline has chosen Auckland Airport to be its destination.”

“Qatar Airways currently flies 177 aircraft to more than 150 destinations across six continents. The addition of Auckland to its global network is part of the airline’s latest route expansion programme, which includes 14 new destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific.”

Auckland Airport estimates that the new daily service will deliver an additional 189,070 seats to the route and contribute $198 million to the New Zealand economy.

“We expect this new route to New Zealand to be very popular with European travellers, providing them with a high quality in-flight service and a great transit experience through the new Hamad International Airport.”

“The flight from Auckland to Doha will also be the world’s longest commercial flight by distance,” says Mr Carter.
