Accessible Properties welcomes new tenants in Hamilton
The sale of Hamilton City Council's pensioner housing complexes has been completed, with Accessible Properties welcoming
more than 300 new tenants.
Accessible Properties is New Zealand’s largest non-government housing provider with a long history of providing good
quality housing that prioritises people with disabilities, older people and those on low incomes. The organisation made
a successful tender for the Council's pensioner housing stock, and its offer was accepted by majority vote during a full
Council meeting in December 2015.
The transfer of ownership of the properties takes place today Monday 7 March, 2016.
The current tenants are people in their retirement and Accessible Properties is taking over with a commitment to causing
as little disruption as possible for them - they are welcome to stay in their homes.
“We have a long history of supporting people who need good quality housing and we look forward to supporting our new
tenants in their current homes,” says Accessible Properties’ General Manager Andrew Wilson.
“We want to modernise and make improvements over time, and we’ll be talking to tenants first to find out what they think
the priorities are and what additional support we could offer. As a registered provider, we have access to government
Income-Related Rent Subsidies (IRRS) that will ensure housing affordability for future tenants while providing
sufficient rental income to keep homes in good condition.
“We have appointed two new tenancy managers to look after these properties – both have worked for the Council before now
and will be familiar to many.”
Accessible Properties and its parent company IHC has been involved with social housing in Hamilton since 1954 with the
opening of Christopher House. Accessible Properties already manages more than a hundred homes in the Waikato region,
including nearly 30 new-builds.
