Kiwifruit NZ welcomes regulations review
The regulator of the kiwifruit industry, Kiwifruit New Zealand (KNZ), has welcomed the review of the Kiwifruit Export
Regulations 1999 and the release of a discussion document by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today.
KNZ believes the regulations have served the industry well for 16 years but the New Zealand industry and the
international fruit market are very different today than they were in 1999.
With a new Chair and a new Chief Executive appointed late last year, KNZ has taken the opportunity to examine its
processes and has been working with government and the industry to develop best practice that is transparent and
accessible. Many of the changes suggested by the review are already under discussion; for example accountability and
reporting, strategic planning, funding and cost recovery, and collaborative marketing.
Collaborative Marketing is a key component of the regulations, but volumes and applicants have remained relatively
static over the past few years. This review is an opportunity to revitalise that process to ensure there is innovation
and diversity in the international marketing of kiwifruit, new and emerging markets are developed, and there are
increasing returns to New Zealand growers.

“We have worked closely with the reviewers and MPI to ensure all aspects of the regulations have been covered, and we
look forward to contributions and input from industry players so the regulations remain fit for purpose and reflect the
needs of the industry today and into the future.
“Our role, as an independent entity, is to safeguard the interests of growers by ensuring Zespri works in their best
interests and to ensure it meets its international trading obligations. That is what we will continue to do.”
