Luuka Jones Enjoys a Big Sleep-in on the Road to Rio

For 27 year old Canoe Slalom Paddler Luuka Jones, a good night’s sleep isn’t just a part of life – it’s a necessity.

Since partnering with bed manufacturer, Sleepyhead, Luuka has noticed a difference in her recovery time and overall performance – which is vital when training for the Rio Olympics.

Sleepyhead Marketing Manager, Felicity Turner, says: “Sleep is so vital to our health and well-being, especially for athletes, yet we are always surprised at the amount of people who struggle to have a revitalising night’s sleep. Part of the reason is they are not investing in the complete sleep experience, which is why we developed our Sleep Solution range including a range of specially designed pillows, duvets and mattress protectors.

“We are really excited to partner with Luuka and help her enhance her sleep experience to ensure she performs her absolute best on her journey to Rio.”

Luuka says: “Sleep is such an important part of my sport, where every day on the water, in training and racing, you have to be able to think critically, react in a split second and be really sharp in general. I know that when I am tired or sleep-deprived I am reducing my chances of being able to execute a good performance. I become slower, find it hard to concentrate, and it’s a lot easier to get frustrated and lose objectivity when you’re tired.

“A good night’s sleep is absolutely crucial to my performance. When I sleep in a bed that isn’t top quality and wake up feeling stiff or sore, it’s especially frustrating as sleeping should be the prime time to recover and refresh for the next day.”

Sleep is especially important for athletes, According to sleep and performance expert American James Mass, 75% of athletes are sleep deprived, which can lower immunity, alter cognition, slow reaction time and lengthen recovery time. *

Luuka agrees: “If I have a few bad night’s sleep in a row it really does affect me. Training performance becomes compromised and I would especially hate to be sleep-deprived leading into a race. A huge part of training is the recovery so you can train hard again the next day and feel refreshed after a quality night’s sleep.

“Thanks to Sleepyhead and their Sanctuary bed and Sleep Solution range, it’s been a real game changer, I’ve been sleeping so much better, don’t wake up during the night, and can sleep in for longer! I now have confidence tackling big days of training because I wake up so refreshed and know I am achieving a much higher level of recovery.”

The Sleepyhead Sleep Solution range includes 16 pillows, four core range duvets and three mattress protectors. Whether you’re a back, side or stomach sleeper; have recurring aches, pains and allergies; or get too hot or cold at night, there is a Sleep Solution just right for you.
