February is New Zealand’s First National Watermelon Month
National Watermelon Month is taking place for the first time in New Zealand, kicking off this week.
February will be a month long celebration of one of the nation’s most popular summer fruits. Led by LeaderBrand, a Kiwi owned producer of fresh fruit and vegetables, a number of initiatives have been planned to help New Zealanders take part in the celebrations.
“We chose February for National Watermelon Month because it’s such a great time to use this iconic New Zealand summer fruit,” says Bevan Roach, LeaderBrand Marketing Manager. “The summer weather means that the watermelon harvest is in full swing, and you will notice the price coming down as supply goes up.”
“We’re hoping National Watermelon Month will convince more Kiwis to pick up a watermelon during their next shop,” he adds. “Not only is it healthy and full of nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, it’s also very versatile. It doesn’t just have to be eaten by the slice – it is also fantastic in salads, salsas, desserts, cocktails and all manner of other tasty summer recipes.”
Starting from this week, New Zealanders will be encouraged to take part in National Watermelon Month through a series of contests and giveaways on Instagram and Facebook. Prizes will include supermarket vouchers and watermelon seeds so fans can have a go at growing their own from scratch. On top of that, food bloggers will be able to enter their watermelon themed recipes into a special competition during National Watermelon Month.
