A global collaboration: Spark teams up with artist Edmund Tay
Kiwi telco Spark has
collaborated with graphic artist Edmund Tay to create a
series of cards which customers can give to friends, family
and colleagues this New Year. Tay is from Malaysia but lives
and works in Shanghai. The collaboration is the first time
the New Zealand telco has partnered with a China-based
visual artist.
Spark’s Head of Business Marketing Richard Sandford said, “People come from all over the world to be together and celebrate Chinese New Year in New Zealand. The nature of business for many of our customers is also very global. We wanted to acknowledge this through a global collaboration of our own.
“Edmund Tay was a natural choice – he’s a brilliant artist, but he also works regularly with clients around the world. His work has an international quality, but at the same time is culturally relevant within the Chinese context he works from.”
The cards will be sent to Spark business customers as a set of five. When joined together, the individual designs on each card align to form one larger design. This references the act of people coming together over the New Year period.
Tay said the cards are inspired by the saying, “Xiángyún jù tuányuán,” which means prosperous clouds gather in unison. “The circle motif has a dual meaning, representing the round table and the idea of coming together in equality, over a meal. The patterns embedded within the circles visualise subtle hints of traditional prosperous patterns such as clouds and other motifs associated with the celebration."
Carrying this idea of reunion further, Spark is marking the year of the monkey with a deal designed to help customers connect with friends and family in China right throughout the year.
Each of the cards is numbered to customers’ accounts, giving them the option of using the cards to refer friends and family to Spark. When a referral is made and the friend or family member signs up for a new Ultra Business Mobile $55.85/month or above plan, the referrer will receive a $50 bonus and the friend will receive a China calling pack giving them 200 free minutes and 100 free texts to mainland China, every month for two years.
“The offer is about celebrating relationships and bringing friends and family together, as well as helping our customers to be more prosperous throughout this next year,” Sandford said.
The bespoke cards and details of the referral offer are being sent to Spark business customers this week. Visit www.spark.co.nz/chinese for more information. Tay’s work can be viewed atcargocollective.com/edumande/U.
