Lightbox on the Money at Critics’ Choice Awards

Lightbox on the Money at Critics’ Choice Awards

Outlander voted most bingeworthy

Lightbox’s Outlander may thrust its heroine 200 years back in history but the online platform’s most popular show is at the forefront of binge-watching it seems.

The show about married combat nurse Claire Randall who is mysteriously swept back in time from 1945 to 1743 has been voted Most Bingeworthy Show at the 2016 Critics’ Choice Television Awards in Los Angeles.

The critics also handed out three gongs to Lightbox show Mr. RobotBest Actor in a Drama Series, Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Lightbox shows Transparentand UnREAL took out awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series respectively.

The Critics' Choice Television Awards are presented annually by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association to honour the finest work in the television industry.

Lightbox CEO Kym Niblock says television viewing habits are changing and ‘binge-watching’ is becoming the norm not only globally but also in New Zealand.

“Some 68 per cent of Lightbox customers are sitting down to enjoy two or three episodes of their favourite television series in one go instead of watching a feature,” Niblock notes. “Outlander is one of our most popular shows so we can easily see why the critics think it’s bingeworthy.”

She says binge-watching is also very common when new content becomes available on the service. This is seen with the recent Lightbox exclusive Flesh and Bone, staring Sarah Hay who was nominated for Best Actress in a Movie made for Television or Limited Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

“Of the subscribers who watched the show, more than a third completed all the episodes within days of it launching and 25 per cent of subscribers binged-watched the series. Flesh and Bonebecame the second most watched series on Lightbox in the first seven days of its launch,” Niblock says.

‘Binge-watch’ – defined by Lightbox as two or more episodes viewed in one session - was last year named word of the year by Collins Dictionary, illustrating just how many consumers across the globe are logging in to that sort of viewing behaviour.
